This simple steamed broccoli recipe takes just ten minutes, makes perfect bright green broccoli, and works with almost any meal. And unlike boiling broccoli, steaming keeps the flavor vibrant and the texture perfectly tender (no mushy broccoli here!) This recipe yields two servings.

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the ones you keep coming back to again and again, and this steamed broccoli is definitely one of those recipes for me. I love it because it's practically foolproof, and you even don't need any fancy equipment. A small pot and lid will do the trick (steamer basket is optional).

And this side works with ALL the things, whether you're making a quick weeknight dinner or need an extra weekend side. Let me show you how easy is is to make it!

🌿 Ingredients

Large head of broccoli next to a portion of butter in a small glass bowl on a brown wood table.

Feel free to substitute olive oil for butter to make this dish vegan and dairy-free; either way is delicious!

See recipe card below for exact quantities.

📝 Instructions

Broccoli florets in a stainless steel steamer basket.
Steam broccoli for 4-5 minutes in a covered pot with a little boiling water.
Steamed broccoli in a white bowl on a blue and tan plaid napkin.
Drain, mix broccoli with melted butter or olive oil, and season with salt & pepper.

Pro tip: If you do happen to have a steamer basket, boil about an inch or so of water in your pot before you place the basket with broccoli in it and cover.

🥧 Serving suggestions

There are SO many great ways to use steamed broccoli, but here are a few of my favorite dishes to serve it with:

  • Creamy Chicken Pasta
  • Oven Baked Salmon
  • Walnut Crusted Chicken

It's also amazing tossed into scrambled eggs or added to leftover rice for a quick lunch. 🙂

💭 FAQ

Can you steam frozen broccoli?

Yes; you can steam frozen broccoli instead of fresh. There is no need to defrost it first, but you may need to add an additional 1-2 minutes of steaming time depending on the size of the florets.

What other seasonings can I add to steamed broccoli?

In addition to butter or olive oil, steamed broccoli also goes great with a little garlic, parmesan or fresh lemon.

Cover, bring to a boil and steam for about 4-5 minutes or until the broccoli just turns bright green. (Drain the water if you're not using a basket.)

Notes

Microwave steamed broccoli: Place the broccoli and a couple tablespoons of water in a covered, microwave-safe dish and cook on high for 2-4 minutes depending on the power of your microwave. Be careful when removing the dish and cover after steaming as they will both be hot. Then, drain and stir in the butter and salt and pepper.
Storage: Steamed broccoli will stay fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
