The best avocado toast recipe is usually the simplest--and this one is no exception. This recipe is totally easy, extremely flexible and SO delicious! You'll never look at toast the same way. 🙂
How to make avocado toast
Fear not, this simple avocado toast recipe is one of the easiest recipes on this website, but it's also one of the most delicious. It's hard to go wrong with real food, and the mighty avocado does not disappoint once it's placed on the perfect slice of bread.
I love to use large slices of whole-grain bread for this one; I find that the complexity of textures in the bread is a great complement to the smooth avocado. But definitely use your bread of choice for this recipe; it will be delicious!
For the avocado, I generally pick out a large one as I find that one large avocado makes the perfect amount for two large slices of bread. If you have a smaller avocado, simply use one slice of bread or two slices of smaller bread. Once you make avocado toast a few times, you'll get a feel for the perfect ratio of avocado to bread. 😉
Tip: Don't use avocados that aren't ripe enough! If you buy an avocado that's vary firm, it'll likely take at least a day or two to ripen on the countertop (no need to refrigerate while it's ripening.) You'll know when it's ripe if the flesh can be easily indented with a little test to the skin.
Once your avocado is ripe, slice it lengthwise and scoop out the flesh from both sides into a bowl. Then use the back of a fork to mash the avocado around in the bowl until it's as smooth as you like it (totally fine and delicious to leave it a little chunky.)
Toast your bread, divide the mashed avocado among the slices and top with a little sea salt...and it's done! If you want to add any toppings...read on.
Tip: It's best to eat avocado toast immediately, since the avocado will brown the longer it sits out (avocado toast does not refrigerate well; better to make fresh and consume right away.)
Some different toppings to choose from
What to put on avocado toast you might ask? The perfect avocado toast seasoning will be different for each person you ask, but here are a few suggestions for toppings to get you started.
Most of the time I actually LOVE just plain sea salt on my avocado toast. It really lets the natural flavor of the avocado shine--perfection.
A close second would be some sprinkled everything bagel toppings on the avocado; super yummy and equally fast.
Some other toppings I love are:
- a squeeze of fresh lime juice or lemon juice
- a bit of extra-virgin olive oil
- a pinch of garlic powder, onion powder or ground cumin
- freshly chopped cilantro or dill
- thinly sliced tomato, onion or radishes
- microgreens like broccoli sprouts (one of my all time favorite toppings!)
- some fresh salsa
- simple guacamole
- a poached or fried egg (see my Avocado Toast with Egg recipe)
Is avocado toast healthy?
That would be a resounding YES!! Avocado toast for breakfast is actually my favorite way to start the day, and research shows that it's heart healthy due to its ability to lower bad cholesterol; a dietary win-win.
Enjoy! 🙂
