🌿 Ingredients
The only ingredients you'll absolutely need to make avo toast are: an avocado, bread and a little salt and pepper. Of course, you're welcome to add any of the suggested toppings as well.
I love to use multi-grain bread for avocado toast; I find that the complexity of textures in the bread is a great complement to the smooth avocado. (And sourdough bread would be a close second to that!) But definitely use your bread of choice for this recipe; it will be delicious no matter what bread you choose.
For the avocado, I find that one large avocado makes the perfect amount for two large slices of bread (2 servings). If I'm just making it for myself, I'll save the other half of the mashed avocado in the fridge for the next day.
Tip: don't use avocados that aren't ripe enough! If you buy an avocado that's very firm, it'll likely take at least a day or two to ripen on the countertop (no need to refrigerate while it's ripening.) You'll know when it's ripe if the flesh can be easily indented with a little push into the skin.
📝 Instructions
Ready to learn how to make avocado toast? Let's do this.
Once your avocado is ripe, slice it lengthwise and scoop out the flesh from both sides into a bowl (see the pro tip below on how to remove the pit.) Then use the back of a fork to mash the avocado around in the bowl until it's as smooth as you like it. (It's totally fine and delicious to leave it a little chunky.)
Pro tip: To remove an avocado pit, place the half with the pit in it on a hard surface and give the pit a fairly strong but controlled whack with a chef's knife to lodge the blade partway into the pit. Then, hold the avocado in one hand as you turn the knife with the other to loosen and remove the pit.
Toast your bread, divide the mashed avocado among the slices (or save half for later) and top with a little sea salt... and you're done! If you want to add any toppings, read on.

What to put on avocado toast you might ask? The perfect avocado toast will be different depending on who you ask, but here are a few ideas for toppings and seasonings to get you started.
Most of the time, I actually LOVE just plain sea salt on my avocado toast. It really lets the natural flavor of the avocado shine—perfection. Another favorite is everything bagel topping; delicious and super fast. And if you have some on hand, kimchi avocado toast is seriously the best combo!
Some other toppings I love are:
- a squeeze of fresh lime juice or lemon juice
- a bit of extra-virgin olive oil
- a pinch of garlic powder, onion powder or ground cumin
- freshly chopped cilantro or dill
- thinly sliced tomato, onion or radishes
- microgreens like broccoli sprouts (one of my all time favorite toppings!)
- some smoked salmon
- feta, mozzarella or burrata cheese
- some fresh salsa
- a poached or fried egg (try this avocado toast with egg recipe)

Avocado toast is best when consumed immediately, but it can be saved in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
🎉 Top tip
The most important tip to make the perfect avocado toast is: make sure your avocado is ripe! Just give it a little squeeze test to make sure you can easily indent the skin a little when you push on it. If you need to wait an extra day for it to ripen, trust me when I say that it's worth the wait. Enjoy! 🙂
