Yes, you read that right: this simple guacamole recipe needs only four ingredients, and takes just five minutes to make. (And you won't believe how good it is!)

Homemade guacamole in a tan serving dish on a marble countertop.

This is the one dip that I make on the regular. And by regular I mean, like at least once a week. It's easy enough that I don't at all mind whipping it up at the last minute, even on the busiest days. Don't get me wrong, I also love this classic guacamole for a special event or when I have a few extra minutes to spare, but I had to post this one as well because who can turn down a batch of fresh, delicious guac that takes only 5 minutes? 😉

I love pairing this easy guacamole dip with thin tortilla chips or fresh veggie sticks like carrots and red bell pepper. And it also makes a mean avocado toast if you want to mix up your breakfast routine a little. (Looking for other 4-ingredient recipes to make life easier? Try this scrumptious miso sauce next; it works great as a veggie dip as well.) Or if you have 10 minutes to spare, you'll also love this easy hummus recipe. 🙂

❤️ Why you'll love this recipe

  • You'll need only 4 ingredients to make it!
  • Take just 5 minutes from start to finish
  • Fresh, nutritious homemade dip vs. store-bought alternatives
  • Makes a great lunchbox add-on
  • Delicious for avocado toast

🌿 Ingredients

As promised, only 4 ingredients are needed for this easy guac recipe. If you're a garlic lover, I also highly recommend a dash of garlic powder. And if you have an extra minute to spare, a chopped Campari tomato takes this recipe over the top.

Pro tip: Make sure your avocados are ripe! Give them a little pinch before you make this recipe; they should be soft when pressed gently. If they are still hard, let them sit out on the counter for another day or two. (For faster ripening, place your avocados in a paper bag with a banana; the banana gives off a gas that accelerates ripening.)

See recipe card below for exact quantities.

📝 Instructions

Halved avocados and a halved lime with a sharp knife on a white and black cutting board.

Step 1: Slice the lime and avocados open lengthwise, and remove the avocado pits and use a spoon to scoop out the flesh into a mixing bowl.

Pro tip: To remove an avocado pit, place the half with the pit in it on a hard surface and give the pit a fairly strong but controlled whack with a chef's knife to lodge the blade partway into the pit. Then, hold the avocado in one hand as you turn the knife with the other to loosen and remove the pit.

Step 2: Juice the lime into the bowl using a citrus juicer if you have one, and add the spices.

Step 3: Use a fork to mash the avocados and incorporate all of the ingredients together. Feel free to leave it chunky or keep mashing to make it smoother. If you'd like, mix in some chopped tomatoes!

📋 Substitutions

This 4 ingredient guacamole recipe is vegan and gluten free as written; feel free to make any of the following substitutions if necessary (it's hard to mess this one up!)

  • Lime - use a lemon instead
  • Cumin - use a little chili powder or curry powder instead, or a pinch of cardamom
  • Sea salt - just use whatever salt you have on hand

📖 Variations

Feel free to choose your favorite add-ons for this guac or try some of my favorites below!

  • Guacamole with cilantro - mix in some freshly chopped cilantro leaves just before serving
  • Guacamole with tomatoes - add some chopped ripe tomatoes such as Campari or cherry tomatoes
  • Guacamole with onions or garlic - add some finely diced red or white onions, some minced garlic, or a pinch of onion or garlic powder
  • Spicy - use chili powder instead of cumin
  • Deluxe - add as many of the extras above as you'd like and serve alongside sour cream if desired

🔪 Equipment

I used the following equipment to make this recipe:

  • cutting board
  • chef's knife
  • medium mixing bowl
  • citrus juicer (optional; you can also just squeeze the lime by hand)

🍱 Storage

Guacamole will stay fresh in an airtight container for up to 2 days in the fridge. Some brownish discoloration is normal during storage; simply mix it up again just before serving if desired.

🎉 Top tip

This easy guacamole recipe is amazingly flexible, so feel free to substitute whatever you have on hand to make it your own. My favorite add-ons are a little garlic or onion powder, and a chopped ripe Campari tomato or two. 🙂

Enjoy!

💭 FAQ

Can I make guacamole if my avocados are still hard?

For best results, you'll need to make sure your avocados are ripe and soft when pressed on gently. If they are still hard, let them sit out on the counter for day or two. For faster ripening, place your avocados in a paper bag with a banana; the banana gives off a gas that accelerates ripening.

Can I make guacamole in advance?

Yes; guacamole will stay fresh for up to two days in an airtight container in the fridge. Some brownish discoloration is normal during storage; if you see that, simply mix your guacamole up again just before serving if desired.

What can I serve guacamole with?

Simple guacamole makes a great dip with tortilla chips or fresh veggie sticks like carrots and red bell pepper. You can also spread it on toast for a delicious avocado toast variation to mix up your breakfast routine.

Do I have to add garlic or onion to guacamole recipe?

No; you can make a basic guacamole dip just using sea salt and lime with mashed avocados, and adding an extra spice or two like ground cumin or chili powder to perk things up.
